Undergraduate Natural Sciences and Veterinary Technology

Biology Major: A college degree in Biology at Mercy College provides a strong foundation in scientific theory and laboratory experience. Our degree will prepare you for graduate study or a career in such areas as Biological Science, Educational Writing, Government Research, or Teaching, for example. Students who wish to fulfill the entrance requirements for medical school should elect a Bachelor of Arts curriculum with a major concentration in Biology and a solid basis in the liberal arts and sciences. Academic advisors at Mercy College assist students in selecting a program of study designed to meet medical school entrance requirements and to serve as preparation for the Medical College Aptitude Test (MCAT).

Medical Technology: To earn an undergraduate degree in Medical Technology, the student will attend Mercy College for 3 years and complete a minimum of 96 credits. During the third year the student applies, under the auspices of Mercy College, to a medical facility that has a Medical Technology Program approved by the Council on Medical Education (CME) of the American Medical Association in collaboration with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Mercy College has affiliations with St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center, NYC and Danbury Hospital in Danbury, CT. Students will normally apply to one of these schools, but may also apply to any CME-ASCP approved School of Medical Technology.

Veterinary Technology: The Veterinary Technology Department at Mercy College offers a degree in Veterinary Technology and also a college degree in Pre-Veterinary Medicine.

The Veterinary Technology degree prepares graduates uniquely suited by virtue of their education and technical skills to fill positions as veterinary and animal research technologists. Mercy College's program is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Licensed veterinary technicians assist veterinarians in private practice, wildlife rehabilitation, zoos and diagnostic laboratories. Animal research technologists work in biomedical research. The program is especially designed to provide students with a solid base in veterinary science by exposing them to animals in settings all over New York.

The Pre-Veterinary Medicine program provides students with a solid base in liberal arts, biological and veterinary sciences in order to fulfill veterinary college entrance requirements. The program is unique in that it is specifically designed to immerse the student in veterinary medicine at the college level. Courses include animal physiology, veterinary pharmacology, veterinary clinical laboratory techniques, animal research and small and large animal medicine. To maximize clinical experience, students may elect to complete externships at a number of prestigious facilities, including Columbia University Medical Center, the Animal Medical Center, the Bronx Zoo and many outstanding animal hospitals in the New York area.
