Undergraduate Mathematics and Computer Information Science
Computer Information Systems Degree: The CIS degree provides students with the knowledge a business needs to solve their problems using computers. Three aspects of the Information Systems field are threaded throughout the program: information technology (the technical aspects of the discipline), information systems (the analysis of problems and design of solutions) and management of information systems (information systems as an integral part of an organization). The recurring themes in each body of knowledge are revisited in a spiral fashion at increasing depth as the courses advance, and build upon the established prerequisites, culminating in a capstone course.
Computer Science Degree: The Computer Science program provides students with the theoretical background and practical experience that will enable them to function effectively in the computer science profession, further their studies in computer science and related fields, and to succeed in a technological society. A breadth-first approach introduces the students to the field using a two-course sequence -- Foundations of Computing I and II. Required major-level courses provide a platform of knowledge in specific areas of study within the Computer Science discipline. In addition to the required set of courses, further breadth is given by requiring students to choose two courses from a list of computer science major-level electives.
Information Technology Degree: The rapid spread of computers and computer-based technologies has generated a dramatic need for skilled workers. Jobs include designing and developing hardware and software systems and incorporating these advances into new or existing systems. Graduates work throughout all of corporate America designing, installing, and using hardware and software. Professionals in the field will be expected to operate, manage, design, and implement information technologies at various levels of complexity.
Mathematics Degree: The Division of Mathematics and Computer Information Science offers programs of study in mathematics leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. Mercy College's programs emphasize the applied aspect of mathematics and all students learn at least one computer language. Our programs are designed to prepare students for the age of information by developing the skills and knowledge that are necessary for the workplace, graduate school and further education, and lifelong learning. The Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics is particularly attractive to students who want to become teachers. Technology is well integrated into the curriculum.
