Graduate Education Degrees
Adolescence Education, Grades 7-12: The Master of Science Degree in Adolescence Education offered by Mercy College will permit qualified applicants to earn up to two certifications while completing the degree program. Depending on a student's undergraduate preparation, it is possible to become eligible for single or dual certification.
Bilingual Education Degree: To meet the critical demand for bilingual teachers in New York City and other urban centers in the state, Mercy College offers a graduate course of study in Bilingual Education (K-12). This M.S. in Education is intended to provide teachers with the knowledge and clinical experiences to instruct children from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds through a bilingual approach which takes into consideration the child, the school and the community. Our registered Master's program emphasizes the theory and practice of bilingual education, multicultural perspectives in education, methods of teaching English as a Second Language, teaching the content areas of the curriculum bilingually, integrating technology into the curriculum, developing communication skills in two languages and using culture-fair assessment measures to evaluate bilingual students.
Childhood Education, Grades 1-6 Degree: This Master of Science Degree Program in Childhood Education offered at Mercy College will permit qualified applicants to earn up to two teacher certifications while completing the degree program. Depending on a student's undergraduate preparation, it is possible to become eligible for single or dual certification.
Early Childhood Education Degree, Birth - Grade 2: The Master of Science Degree Program in Early Childhood Education, Birth - Grade 2, offered at Mercy College will permit qualified applicants to earn as many as three teacher certifications while completing the degree program. Depending on a student's undergraduate preparation, it is possible to become eligible for single, dual, or tri-certification.
Middle Childhood Education Degree, Grades 5 - 9: The Master of Science Degree in Middle Childhood Education, Grades 5-9, will permit qualified applicants to earn up to two certifications while completing the degree program. Depending on a student's undergraduate preparation, it is possible to become eligible for single or dual certifications.
School Building Leadership Degree: Mercy College's programs of graduate study in School Building Leadership include course work in the leadership and management of schools as well as current issues in education and an administrative internship. Completion of the program qualifies the individual for New York State certification as a school administrator and supervisor (SAS) and school district administrator (SDA).
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Degree: The M.S. in TESOL program at Mercy College is designed to prepare teachers for careers in TESOL, or TEFL. The program was developed to help satisfy this growing international need. Most importantly, students completing this 36 credit program, as well as all New York State Department of Education test and field experience requirements, are eligible for permanent New York State certification as a K - 12 TESOL teacher. Program participants are trained to provide both stand alone ESL instruction and/por ESL as component part of a bilingual program.
Teaching Literacy Degree: Mercy College offers a 36 credit M.S. in Teaching Literacy which, when coupled with all New York State required tests and field experiences, leads to permanent certification in Reading. This program was specifically designed to complement the pedagogical training of teachers who have had two years of teaching experience. Holders of this certificate are eligible for assignments as reading specialists or remedial reading teachers for grades K - 12, or may choose to use this M.S. degree to satisfy the Master's level study required for permanent certification in either elementary or secondary education.
